Toy Horse Scales Explained
Our collection of horse toys includes figurines in many different scales. To break down what these different scales mean, we've put together this handy little guide to explain them to you.
The key thing to remember when trying to figure out scales is the lower the number after the colon, the bigger the size of the toy.
Here’s a quick run down to help you understand the difference between toy horse scales and which collections they belong to.
Toy Horse Scale | Toy Size | Toy Collections | Recommended Age |
---|---|---|---|
1:9 | 20 x 6 x 32 cm | Breyer Traditional | 7+ |
1:12 | 15 x 5 x 22 cm | Breyer Classics | 4+ |
1:16 | 14 x 4 x 18 cm | Bruder | 3+ |
1:24 | 13 x 4 x 15 cm | Papo, Schleich, Mojo | 3+ |
1:32 | 6 x 3 x 8 cm | Breyer, Kids Globe | 4+ |
What is a Horse Scale?
A horse scale refers to the size of a horse toy relative to a real horse. A toy horse scale can help you determine how big or small a toy horse will be compared to the other toys in your little one's farmyard collection.
Toy horses are often made in different scales, with the 1:9 scale being the largest. This means that for every inch of the toy, it represents 9 inches of a real horse.
Understanding Different Scales
Horse 1:9 Scale
Approximate Size | Recommended Age |
20cm x 6cm x 32cm | 7 years + |
The largest model size available, with horses roughly measuring 20cm tall by 6cm wide by 32cm long. Breyer Traditional Series models are suitable for playing with, collecting, displaying and more! They are beautifully hand-crafted and usually packaged in colourful window boxes.
Horse 1:12 Scale
Approximate Size | Recommended Age |
15cm x 5cm x 22cm | 4 years + |
Breyer Classics 1:12 scale is a bit smaller than the Traditional 1:9 scale, with horses roughly measuring 15cm high by 5cm wide by 22cm long.
These horses are also handcrafted but geared towards the slightly younger horse lover, giving them excellent play value. They’re more affordably priced than the highly coveted collectable Traditional Series, too, so they’re a great way for your child to start their Breyer collection.
Horse 1:16 Scale
Approximate Size | Recommended Age |
14cm x 4cm x 18cm | 3 years + |
This is rather a limited range of very solid horses, with a typical horse roughly measuring 14cm high by 4cm wide by 18cm long.
The Bruder horse trailer and the horse are great quality, and there’s a horse stable, field shelter, fences, some new riding accessories and people.
Horse 1:24 Scale
Approximate Size | Recommended Age |
13cm x 4cm x 15cm | 4 years + |
Slightly smaller in size than the 1:12 scale, our biggest collection in this scale is the Horse Club by Schleich collection, with horses roughly measuring 13cm high by 4cm wide by 15cm long. They’re typically recommended for ages 4 and up, but some of the playsets have small parts, so they’re more suited to ages 6 and up.
They’re geared more toward the younger horse lover and come in many breeds, sold as a single horse or in playsets. These are affordably priced and fantastic for encouraging imaginative play.
Horses 1:32 Scale
Approximate Size | Recommended Age |
6cm x 3cm x 8cm | 4 years + |
This scale is significantly smaller than the above. Our biggest collection in this scale is the Breyer Stablemates collection, with horses roughly measuring 6cm high by 3cm wide by 8cm long.
They're generally recommended for ages 4 and up, but some of the playsets are recommended for ages 6 and up due to the smaller parts. Once again, they’re beautifully detailed and come in lots of breeds and colours. They also come with many additional items, such as tack and barns and are featured in many lovely playsets, too.

Are Horse Toys Smaller Than 1:32 Safe for Small Children?
Horse toys made to a 1:32 scale aren't recommended for children under 4 years old. This is because of the small size of the toy and the risk of choking. You should always supervise young children when playing with small toys.
